Common culprits that may cause gas or colic in babies include beans, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. If your baby has gas or colic, it is recommended to avoid these foods for a few weeks to see if they relieve symptoms. However, it is important to eat a variety of foods, including lots of vegetables and whole foods. Virtually all fish contain some mercury, a common contaminant that is a known neurotoxin. But the health benefits of eating fish (high in protein, low in fat) usually outweigh the risk. The CDC recommends avoiding shark, swordfish, blanquillo and mackerel as they contain the highest levels of mercury. While breastfeeding mothers may drink alcohol, it is recommended to limit alcoholic beverages to one standard drink per day and wait 2 hours after consuming an alcoholic beverage to feed their baby. Heavy drinking can have a negative effect on your baby's growth, development and sleep schedule. Chocolate can act as a laxative for a baby and contains a low amount of caffeine. Pay attention to the results of the baby's diaper after having enjoyed a chocolate feast. If you run longer than usual or the baby seems a little agitated, you may need to reduce it or eliminate it altogether until you are no longer breastfeeding your baby. To help your body absorb iron, eat iron-rich foods with foods high in vitamin C such as citrus fruits. If avoiding a food can cause a nutritional imbalance (for example if you eliminate all dairy products because your baby is intolerant to cow's milk), talk to your doctor about consulting a nutritionist for advice on how to replace other foods or take nutritional supplements.
